<p>The Om is a sacred syllable used in the Hindu tradition around which the practice of yoga has been created. Om is a sound, and not really a word. Indeed, the sound can be better described by the word Aum, but most people are more familiar with the term Om.</p>
<p>It appears at the beginning of almost all Hindu texts and is chanted before any reading of Hindu scripture and before all prayers and mantras. It is often chanted before starting yoga classes, even if you practice on your own.</p>
<p>Be seated on the floor if you can, or on a chair, with your back and head straight. If you are are on the floor, cross your legs and place your hands in a mudra on your knees. Try to relax through breathing. Try to get the sound out in a single tone by closing your mouth very slowly and uttering the letters Ah, U, and M for the length of a full breath.</p>
<p>The three sounds should run into each other to form one smooth syllable. The sound should last until you get all the air out of your lungs, and after that you should relax in preparation for the exercises. This chant should get you quite centered and relaxed.</p>
