Keeping Artificial Trees Looking New
Posted on 24 August 2010
Artificial trees and plants are more and more commonplace thanks to the improvements that have been made in their manufacture and appearance. Before, they weren’t known for their durability and looked nothing like the real thing. Today they are so realistic that people sometimes have to touch them to distinguish them from the real thing.
Because more and more households have two adults going out to work, many families are opting for artificial trees in the home because there simply isn’t the time to care for real ones. Similarly, they are very popular in offices where there is a need to brighten up the décor without there being time available to devote to them and where the office might be empty for several days in a row during festive seasons. With the popularity of artificial trees being owed primarily to the little care they need, it can seem a little strange to discuss their maintenance.
Whilst even the least green-fingered amongst us could successfully keep artificial trees, they still require some care in the form of cleaning. Because most are made with silk, they will very quickly begin to wilt under the weight of any dust on their leaves. Dust will also detract from their striking green appearance.
Cleaning artificial trees calls for a degree of gentleness. Fortunately, their cleaning can be included in normal household cleaning. On a weekly basis, the trees and plants should be carefully dusted with a feather duster to remove any lose dust or cob webs which have formed. Every two weeks or so, the plants can be dusted more thoroughly and any remaining dirt cleaned away with a damp cloth.
Whilst they aren’t alive, care will still be needed to make artificial trees and plants last as long as possible. For this reason you might wish to carry out a more thorough clean every few months with a specialised cleaning product. To avoid damage to the silk leaves, special products should be used. Usually, the shop or website which sold you the tree or plant will stock a suitable cleaning product.
