And the Ideal Weight is….

Posted on 07 September 2011

In modern society, the largest concern with regards to health is weight. On one side of the scale with fast food chains sprouting up everywhere – one main concern is obesity that comes from too much eating. On the other side of the scale, with skinny celebrities and models gracing the our TV screens and billboard ads, the other main concern is eating disorders and malnourishment. Severe health risks are associated with not only the overweight but the underweight. So what should our ideal body weight really be?

There have been many means that have been devised to determine your ideal weight. One f the most popular is the “People’s Choice” formula designed by Dr. S.B. Halls. The formula strives to predict what people of a specific height, weight and age would prefer for their ideal weight.

A much more sure fire way to determine how healthy you are is the BMI that stands for Body Mass Index. It connects the relationship among the weight and height of people to determine the amount of fat present on the body and how likely it is that you would get sick from it. It is calculated by the formula:

weight in pounds/(height in inches)2 x 703.

This is done by getting your weight in pounds. Divide it by your height in inches. Divide the answer again by your height in inches. Finally, multiply it by 703. The result you get is your Body Mass Index.

An example is the following: You weigh 120 pounds. Divide it by your height 72 inches. You get 1.67. Divide 1.67 by your height 72 inches. You get 0.0232. Multiply it by 703. The answer is 16.31. That would be your BMI.

A BMI of less than 18.5 means you are too thin, 18.5 – 22.9 means you are average, and 23.0 – 24.9 means you are too fat. A BMI above 25.0 means you are morbidly fat.

BMI combined with ideal weight study can help you figure out the most appropriate and suitable weight, depending on your age, gender and height.
